Benefit for Helpmate: Sisters Doin’ It For Ourselves! June 6, 2019
An evening of female-led entertainment showcasing Elvira Kurt, internationally acclaimed Canadian lesbian comedienne plus our very own local Asheville talent to include Indie Appalachian Folk singer/songwriters Tina and Her Pony as well as Kathryn O’Shea (plus special guest of Womansong!) and the drummers of Wild Bodema!
Elvira Kurt is a Canadian Comedy Award-winning, Cannes Film Festival award winning (Real Women Seen), Toronto Fringe Festival Patron’s Pick (Parallel Play), sold out multi-solo show performing (Funny AF, Fearless, Homosexual Panic, Fired Up) and CSA nominated stand-up comic and Second City veteran whose credits as star, host, guest, writer and or talent director are simply far too many to mention. Except for these: Baroness Von Sketch Show, Iron Chef Canada, The Great Canadian Baking Show, Master Chef Canada, SpinOff, NickMom Night Out NYC, The Debaters, Degrassi, YTV’s The Game, George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, Cook’d, Popcultured with Elvira Kurt, Four Weddings Canada, Best House, The Gayest Show Ever, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Ellen DeGeneres’ HBO special, Just For Laughs, Winnipeg, Halifax, Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals and, of course, Elvira’s unforgettable stint on both of CBC Radio’s hit show, ‘Q’ and, ‘q’. She has most recently received the Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing in a Lifestyle or Reality/Competition Program or Series (This is the equivalent of our Emmy’s Award!).
In a soundscape rich in folk and americana offerings Tina and Her Pony (Tina Collins and Quetzal Jordan) stand out with their clarity and freshness. Their harmonies, arrangements, lyrics and captivating vocals combine to create something greater than the sum of the pieces which, taken individually are deceptively straightforward. Their talents are honed sharper on their latest release, “Champion” (2017), which chronicles complex emotional landscapes with the kind of wisdom and honesty required from roots music in its most distilled and cherished forms. Champion” was recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC where they make their home. Tina & Her Pony has toured extensively for the last decade, covering the USA, Canada, Europe, and The United Kingdom.
Kathryn O’Shea is a folk singer/songwriter who was born and raised in Asheville, NC, known best for her hauntingly poignant lyricism and masterful vocal play. This past autumn, Kathryn placed 2nd overall in the 11th annual Brown Bag Songwriter’s Competition at The Asheville Music Hall and opened for LA-based artist Terra Naomi at 7 Stages Theater in Atlanta. As Immersive Atlanta put it in their review of her debut single, “The moment Kathryn O’Shea’s enormous voice slips into the jaunty bustle of ‘Snow,’ you’ll surely wonder what record label she’s gunning for.”
Wild Bodema is a group of Asheville women percussionists specializing in authentic West African rhythms played on traditional instruments. Creating community through drumming since 2006, Wild Bodema shares high energy music with an attitude of fun and friendship. Wild Bodema means Wild Women Who Drum and their ancient drum beats will call to your inner wildness, too. Find Wild Bodema on Facebook or email [email protected].
